suck on it, macys

from The Wall Street Journal

Feb. 2, 2009

Macy's said it will cut 7,000 jobs, or 4% of its work force, amid a sweeping reorganization of its nationwide structure. Macy's also said it sees same-store sales, or sales at stores open more than a year, being down between 6% and 8% in 2009. The company also will cut its quarterly dividend.

Again, I feel horrible for the people that are out of jobs. But I'm enjoying yet another sad news story about Macy's.

Ok, I must know, because I have been wondering for ages...

What is your bad, bad history with Macys that makes you loathe it?

They bought my store, Marshall Fields. And they were most arrogant about it.

Marshall Fields was the store in Chicago. It had history and character. You went downtown during Christmastime to visit the windows and eat at the Walnut Room next to the giant tree.

When Target owned Fields they respected the brand and the history. Macy's acquired it and basically said Fuck You. They changed what was good about shopping in Fields. I think what really pushed me overboard what this booklet that I received a day after the switch was made that touted how wonderful Macy's was in the Community. Not the best thing to mail especially to the Chicago market the day after the switch.

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with Macy's in NY. They have a long and storied history there. But I'll never forgive them for what they did to Fields. (But I'm not going to be joining this group any day soon.)

Ok! That makes total and complete sense and I understand now. I do not blame you for the hate in Chicago. You just can't go messing with a historied institution and expect their patrons to love you.

Ha. I do want them run out of town, yes.

Wouldn't it be awesome if someone took over those stores and restored the MF name? I don't know whether that's even possible, legally. Macy's might actually own the MF name now. *shudders*

As you know, the OP Fields' building is a Border's on the ground floor and offices above. At least they didn't tear down the beautiful building.

Oh, that's good to know! That's what I was worried about....that if they go completely under, that the building would be in trouble.

I think there might be actual riots, if that happened, you know? Torches and pitchforks and everything.

I have a feeling that if they went under SOMEONE would come to the rescue of the State Street building. There's just too much history there. Even if it were to turn it into Condos. Something would save it.

Hmmm, makes me wonder what they did to the Lake Forest Store. That one was so small (compared to the others).

It would be very awesome if someone else took them over and restored the name. Sadly, I doubt it would happen. Someone was telling me that Macy's sued or threatened to sue some little mom and pop place on the South Side because they created a Marshall Field's sandwhich or something. Because Macy's owns the trademark, they went after them.

I'll say it again, FU Macys!

I've always loved that they kept the Field's building facade. Seeing that shade of green always makes me happy and reminds me of "my store".
