suck it, dora

Newsweek has a good article on "Sesame Street", That Show That Counts.

Reading the article reminded me how truly remarkable that show has been. It's easy to dismiss it as just a children's show, but the show was truly ground-breaking.

(And what does Dora give us???? Nothing but yelling at backpack.)

Thanks, Gatz - great photos, too. Love the one of Oscar with Kofi Annan. :-)

Have you read Street Gang? I highly recommend it.

It's on my wishlist. I saw it at Borders when it first came out and they only had one copy left but it was a bit worn. If I'm going to shell out the $, I want a nice copy.

It looked like a good read.

I was watching Diego (Doras cousin/brother I don't know whatever) in Amsterdam. The thing about that show was that it was pretty educational up to the point where a condor raised the sun with his wings. It must of been confusing for the kids, very educational then plain out fudging.

The baby condors couldn't fly at night so an adult condor raised the sun with it's wings. At least that's my understanding, the thing was half in Dutch and half in English, my 4 year old cousin was translating for me LOL ;D

What in the world are you doing up now? And is that why you are talking gibberish? ;-)

My godchild Abby thought Diego was the man. I was the cool Aunt the year I got her Diego jammies.

(I hate him slightly less than Dora.)

I was just taking a break between naps. I shall be returning to the land of nod momentarily.

Is Diego supposed to be more of a grown up? I can never tell.

You're asking me? I have never watched a couple episode without falling asleep. Abby once threw a pillow at me shouting "Wakey, Wakey, Auntie Gatz".

Sweet dreams to you.

That article makes me somewhat proud that my friends and I quote sesame street on a shockingly regular basis. LOL. Cause yeah, we're in our twenties, but that doesn't stop us from watching Sesame Street for hours at a time apparently. :-P

(Although I still think the new lyrics to the Cookie Monster song SUCK. (C IS FOR COOKIE DAMNIT AND IT IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME!)

Although, Cookie Monster singing about "Healthy foooood, taste so goooood....." blinged out with about 20 gold chains and with the fruits and vegetables as back-up singers.....that was a quality trip, right there. :-)

It's hard to say whether Classic Sesame Street or the current version is better. I'm tempted to say Classic, but, looking back on youtube, there was definitely some stuff that probably should have had the 'adult' edges smoothed just a bit. On the other hand, *as* an adult, seeing a little 'bite' is interesting. These days, there's too much of some stuff, and not enough of others. Too much damn Elmo. I like the *character*, but the voice is gratingly annoying. As is that damn dancing elephant. And I really miss that there's hardly any time for classic things like Bert & Ernie, or the Two-Headed Monster smashing their heads together while they tried to sound out words. The phonics element seems to have been trimmed to single-letters. I don't get that, but whatevs.

and, I'd watch a lot more Sesame Street if my PBS station was sensible about showing it....they show it twice a day--at 10am, and at 12pm. Yes, that's right....the first one ends, wait an hour, and look! There's the SAME DAMN EPISODE again. I mean, sheesh! Give it two or three hours, willya?

Thanks for linking, that was a really interesting article.

C IS for cookie and no one will ever convince me otherwise.

The thing that pisses me off, as a Sesame Street purist, is that everyone can see Snuffleupagus now. When only Big Bird could see him he represented all the imaginary friends that kids (myself included) treasured as very real parts of their lives. It was okay that no one else could see my imaginary friends. They were still friends. And now Snuffy just an adorably bashful wooly mammoth.

Which is nice and all, but it's not right.

And for the record, I sort of like Dora. But Sesame Street rules.

(Toby thinks so, too.)
