no fireworks makes the baby jesus cry

Chicago cancels July 3 fireworks show

This makes me very sad. Not because I am one of the 1 million in the audience. I enjoy it from the comfort of my couch on tv. It makes me sad because it's another tradition that's now dead.

What's next? No dying the river green for St. Patrick's Day?

Stupid economy.

...I mean, as someone who couldn't get to the fireworks at all last year, and who the year before had to watch (could barely see and hear not at all) pressed up against a chain-link fence at Belmont Harbor the year before, I'm actually quite pleased at the prospect of a fireworks show that's actually close to where I live. But I understand: fireworks are one of my favorite things ever.

I LOVE Fireworks but smaller shows are just not the same thing. Last year my friend's suburb did a very impressive show. But even that was smaller and didn't feature as many cool fireworks. I love being able to watch on TV.

I think it's short-sighted and I think the Taste is going to suffer. Attendance is going to go down. For a lot of people the only reason to attend ToC was the Fireworks.
