no fireworks makes the baby jesus cry

Chicago cancels July 3 fireworks show

This makes me very sad. Not because I am one of the 1 million in the audience. I enjoy it from the comfort of my couch on tv. It makes me sad because it's another tradition that's now dead.

What's next? No dying the river green for St. Patrick's Day?

Stupid economy.

The one year I tried to go --- as opposed to watching from the comfort of my couch --- I agreed to meet some friends at the Planetarium peninsula. In the years before cell phones. :P.

So when we couldn't find each other, I found a spot to watch on my own.... until a thunderstorm began. Serious lightning sent everyone running. I ended up under a 6x6 canopy with what felt like 100 other people, wedged so tightly together that the blue dye in the shirt the guy next to me was wearing bled onto the oatmeal of the top I had on.

There was no show. We all looked like a drowned rats.

But for blocks, everyone was laughing, rushed with energy, moving on to somewhere dry to rehash it...

Which is to say: Even the shows that didn't work were somehow fun.... :)

I think that was the year I was on the phone with the best friend watching tents FLY up near the Art Institute. We opted not to go anywhere. (The tornado siren going off might have also been a bit of a hindrance...)

I don't like this.
