no fireworks makes the baby jesus cry

Chicago cancels July 3 fireworks show

This makes me very sad. Not because I am one of the 1 million in the audience. I enjoy it from the comfort of my couch on tv. It makes me sad because it's another tradition that's now dead.

What's next? No dying the river green for St. Patrick's Day?

Stupid economy.

"So the idea is, we're encouraging people to go back to their communities" WHAT???? Um, idiots, the communities have their celebrations on July 4th. Which is why it's always been so AWESOME that the CITY does theirs on JULY 3rd! SEE HOW THERE IS ZERO OVERLAP?

That is very depressing. Seriously, how about a less visible, less soul-sucking way to cut costs?

Yes and no. My community is actually goofy and does their fireworks on the 3rd too. (I found out the hard way a couple of years ago when I stumbled into traffic near the school. Couldn't move anywhere. People park in the Jewel parking lot near Luthern General and don't budge.)

I definitely think attendance at the ToC is going to suffer. Tons of people would go down just for the fireworks. Removing that incentive... who wants to pay for overpriced tickets and fight with crowds? I rather go to the individual restaurants and not deal with some asshole that drank too much and is getting belligerent.

And the other thing... the beauty of it was that they had unique fireworks set to music. Smaller community displays can't afford the really cool ones.
